The African Studies Group (ASG), in collaboration with the African Research and Engagement in Australia (AREiA) initiative, invites you to join the 3rd annual International Conference on the theme:

Reimagining Migration in(out) of Africa in the Post-Pandemic World. Taking Stock and Building Resilience.

The call for papers is now open and closes on Friday 15 July 2022 at 11:59 AEST.

The Reimagining Migration in(out) of Africa Conference seeks to bring together scholars (students, faculty, and researchers), advocates, practitioners, policymakers, and community members within and outside Australia for a conversation on the increasing politicisation of mobility in and out of the African continent and the experiences of migrant communities and their resilient cultures. Submit Abstract/Presentation Proposals

We invite papers and presentation proposals on any related topic but particularly those focused on migrations in(out) of Africa and the global South and the experiences of migrant communities and their resilient cultures.

Abstracts/presentation proposals of up to 300 words are invited from researchers, practitioners and community members around the following themes and related questions:

Migration discourses

1. Why/should people move freely?
2. Are some migrants more worthy than others?
3. To what extent is migration scholarship based on migrant experiences and stories?
4. How do migrants cope and build resilience in host nations/communities?
5. What are the contributions of migrants to their host communities?
6. How has the pandemic shaped the flow of people and resources?

Migration and policy framing

1. What informs migration policy framing and legislation?
2. To what extent are migrant experiences factored into policy and legislation that concern them?

Migration in practice and migrant experiences

1. What are the lived experiences of migrants in building resilience around challenges such as discrimination, stereotyping, employment difficulties, mental health and the COVID 19 pandemic?
2. How do migrants perceive themselves and their contributions to host countries/communities?

To encourage student participation, a prize of AU$500 will be awarded to the best student paper.
